New on the Columbus food truck scene last week was Sophie’s Gourment Pierogi (aka ‘Sophie’s Gastrogi’). We loved their painted truck with a decorated cab and some cute design touches. We also love their pierogi – boiled and then pan fried, the way they should be!
As a new operation they are still tweaking the details of some of their dishes, but what you can expect is a nice mix of tradition – potato and cheese pierogi with onions, sour cream – and some innovative marriages of flavors inspired by cuisines such as Italian and Mexican with pierogi. It might sound a little unusual, and it is, but from what we tasted on day 2 it has a lot of potential.
We tried the Vintage (traditional style, shown above) and the Soph (below) which comes with Yuengling braised pork belly, caramelized onions, and a grain mustard & tarragon compound butter. The flavored butters are one of the signatures of Soph’s gastrogi and we particularly liked the lemon basil butter that accompanies the Italian. At the moment the pierogi are all cheese and potato filled, and the fusion flavors are added by the way of toppings and accompaniments.
The truck is run by Stephen Redzinak and his wife and is named after his grandmother. Stephen is a former Sodexho corporate chef, originally from New Jersey, with a lot of experience in the food industry. He’s long dreamed of having his own food truck. As well as pierogi they are offering a range of salads and some sweet treats like a very good watermelon mint lemon ice (pictured below), chocolate popcorn, and Charlotte and Olivia’s ice cream cups.
You can find Sophie’s Pierogi at The Campus Pitt Stop (Lane and Kenny) a few days a week for lunch, at Columbus Commons on Thursday lunchtime and Dinin’ Hall one day a week in June. Follow them on twitter or facebook for updates.
