One part inspiration and one part lucky break lead husband and wife Paul and Leslie Humphrey to launch their mobile creperie earlier this month. They were inspired by their European honeymoon and then opportunity found them in the form of some friends offering up a crepe cart logo they had been working on. Although they hadn’t had any experience in the food industry, they decided to take the plunge and try and offer people the same experience they enjoyed  during their time in Europe.

Leslie’s can currently be found at Pearl Alley market on Tuesdays and Fridays, on Broad street near Third on Monday and Wednesday for Breakfast and Lunch and on Third Thursday evenings on 5th Avenue in Grandview outside the Twisted Vine. They have lots of plans for other locations and events so, check their Facebook page for up to date locations and hours.

Leslie’s offers a choice of sweet and savory crepes, as well as Illy coffee. The crepes are left on the grill longer than at other creperies resulting in a crispier crepe. We tried two of their savory offerings: the feta, egg and spinach and the new vegetarian crepe.

The crepes are substantial and made a filing lunch. The spinach, feta and egg was our favorite: a crispy crepe with the salty kick of feta, fresh spinach leaves and cooked to order scrambled egg. Doesn’t it look good?

The vegetarian was similar to a quesadilla, with black bean salsa, sour cream and grated cheese. I suggested melting the cheese more and having some optional hot sauce and Paul was very receptive to the feedback. He admitted that they were still working out some of the kinks and tweaking their menu.

We’re looking forward to a return visit to try the sweet crepes.

Rad Dog!

Tuesday-Friday lunchtimes usually found at Broad & High. Often found at special events and festivals.
Saturday’s sometimes found at Pattycake Bakery as part of the Pattycake Rad Dog sticky bun challenge.

Rad Dog‘s hot dog cart established by owner operator Tawd Bell in July 2008, was an early pioneer of the new wave of food carts. Rad Dog is now a well established vegan friendly street food option and a familiar sight downtown. Vegans are not usually well served by street food vendors, so Rad Dog is a great compliment to other street food vendors at festivals.

Tawd uses Tofurky hot dogs, brats and kielbasa from Portland, Oregon. Apart from that he tries to source as much as he can locally and he uses rolls from Stan Evans bakery in Grandview and Pretzel buns from Brezel. He also serves locally made Luna burgers.

Tawd splits the dogs lengthwise to maximize surface area and get them extra crispy. Popular offerings include the Cowabunga with chili and salsa. This is a dog to be approached carefully if you are wearing a white shirt.

and the Rad dog – a beer brat with sauerkraut, onions and peppers. The Tofurky brat goes really well with toppings, but for an unadorned dog, the Italian sausage is the winner on flavor.

As well as dogs and burgers, Tawd also offers Blue Sky Sodas and Pattycake Bakery cookies.

We typically don’t need much persuasion to visit the treasure trove that is Tensuke Japanese Market, but with the lure of an okonomiyaki cart set up outside, we headed there at the earliest opportunity.

Foodie Cart

street food columbus, Japanese crepe cart

Cuisine: Japanese with myriad other influences

Location varies, see their Facebook page or Twitter stream for the latest.
Can often be found outside Tigertree in the Short North or on Gay Street.

Driving around downtown on any weekday at lunchtime, you’ll inevitably see plenty of lunch carts.  Recognizable by their red & white umbrellas, they usually serve gyros, brats, hot dogs and the like… just as they did 5, 10, hell, even 15 years ago.

Almost lost amongst them today, though, was something completely outside of the norm.

Instead of waterlogged brats, this renegade cart was hawking ‘steamed curry pork’.  In lieu of dry, shaved gyro loaf in stale pita bread, their menu teased with the promise of ‘jerk kalbi short rib’.  They’re called Foodie Cart, and they make extravagantly creative Japanese-style crepes.
