28 Jul

RT’s Grill
Cuisine: Breakfast, Lunch Dinner and Late Night(?)
Clintonville / No Man’s Land between Clintonville and Worthington (depends whom you ask)
Across from Pig Iron BBQ – 5295 N. High St
(Closed)

RT’s Grill started serving food at soccer and baseball games. The R & T are Rob and Tina. They were having lunch at Pig Iron one day, saw the empty lot across the street then decided to try out the location. R & T opened at their present spot the third week of July. Business is slow but steady. Rob and Tina assisted by their friend Mike, plan to give late night a try this weekend from 7 pm to 1 or 2 am.

The menu lists breakfast and lunch basics. We defer to Breakfast with Nick for the morning fare review. Lunch includes hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken sandwiches and such as well as a daily special. The specials vary but include chicken and noodles, meatloaf and other home cooked dinner favorites.

The bologna sandwich was sampled on the recon visit. It was thickly sliced and grilled. Serving options included cheese, tomato, onion and pickles.

Street Eats has been following Earth’s Crust and Michelle Page for a long time, so long in fact that this post is a joint production by Vivsmack, CMH Gourmand & Hungrywoolf.

Street eating is all too often synonymous with hot dogs, gyros, and other meaty morsels. But not in Columbus. Joining the ranks of Rad Dog, Lucky Ladle and other mobile vegan & vegetarian friendly carts, Dreddie Page (a.k.a. Michelle), who is based out of the Clintonville Community Market, has been offering health conscious pizza and baked treats using local, organic, fresh ingredients. Using whole wheat berries (germ included!) and spelt, Michelle mills her own flour to ensure that the menu is minimally processed with the freshest possible flavor and the highest nutritional value. Her grains come from the Amish farms. She does not use white refined flour or refined sugars. She does use natural ingredients with a dash or dollop of love depending on the item. When Vivshmack visited there were three pizza options: caramelized onions and apples with Daiya cheddar, cheese, and pepperoni. She chose two slices (the Daiya option and the pepperoni) for $5 and was really impressed with the light and nutty crust. Yesterday Michelle was offering a choice of two 8 inch pizzas: Ohio cheese pizza with locally made sauce and 3 cheese blend and a tasty homemade broccoli pesto pizza with fresh mozzarella and tomato. Vegan cheese is also available.

whole grain pizza cart

The Earth’s Crust cart hops around town offering up delicious sandwiches, signature pizzas and a selection of baked goods. The menu changes daily and seasonally. Sandwiches are made with whole wheat, vegan, sliced bread from Stan Evans Bakery, a little known bake shop located in Grandview. Vivian sampled the Tomato NOTzarella sandwich served warm straight from the cart’s built in griddle.

Michelle is available for catering orders and has a fantastic selection of pies, rolls, scones and cookies. Check out a menu here. Rumor has it that Earth’s Crust pizza are much loved by Clintonville families and super popular with neighborhood kiddies so call ahead if you have any special requests or are placing a large order.

Michelle Page is a budding mobile food mogul. You may see her Krazy Monkey truck resting in the parking lot of Global Village Coffee Shop and Gallery lot in Clintonvile this summer in between work to get it ready for the road. In the meantime, she operates a space inside selling her juices and baked goods. If there is an outdoor event with food carts you can expect the Earth’s Crust cart or the Krazy Monkey truck will be there.

Street Eats Columbus: Season 2

23 Apr

Not all Mobile Food kitchens roll away in the winter, but most do. This spring, most of the carts, trucks and trailers from last year are back. We have also heard of many new vendors soon to swim into the ever growing pond of mobile food. For readers that think this is a fad or passing fancy, think again and eat some more. Mobile food is here is stay in Columbus and the nation.

The National Restaurant Association show in the Chicago is the largest food vendor event in the world. This year, mobile food is there in a big way. Several books have just come off the presses including Food Trucks: Dispatches and Recipes from the Best Kitchens on Wheels. The Great Food Truck Race was a smash hit on TV. Locally mobile food vendors have just formed COMFVA: The Central Ohio Mobile Food Vendors Association. Street meat is a serious business and it is growing.

The Street Eats team is a serious collective of a cadre of culinary adventurers that take food and food writing seriously. We all have some connection to the culinary trades and one of us recently graduated from Hot Dog University (a course in all things hot dog cart). Columbus has long been a test bed and launching ground for new food concepts. In the case of the Midwest and most of the country, for the genre of mobile kitchens, our city is ahead of the curve. This should be a great year for mobile food so join us in our adventures in eating and help us support small business at it’s best.

The best place to start to try out a cart? Expect some Mobile Food festivals this summer. The Wexner Center will host a food cart weekly at their Market at 15th & High on Thursdays starting in a few weeks. In addition to new trucks and updated hours with locations for veteran street vendors we will let you know about events as they are scheduled. Don’t forget our Taco Truck Community, the largest in the Midwest, when you want dine al fresco.

If you care to be a savvy street eater, you can pick up a Small Business Beanstalk card for savings at some mobile vendors. (See the current examples here).

Boston Bert’s Seafood

Corner of Indianola and Blenheim (Keith’s Sunoco) in Clintonville

Clintonville has had a secret haute mobile food scene for quite some time that was largely off the radar.  Most people think of Ray Ray’s Hog Pit BBQ as the first Clintonville cart. Such is not the case. There was another cart at Weber and Indianola which burned down in 2008.   Then there was a burger and hot dog cart at the corner of Blenheim and Indianola (Keith’s Sunoco) for nearly a decade which was recently replaced by Boston Bert’s Seafood. My Snappy Wagon

18 Aug

Location (? – believed to be Closed) – (last seen) parking lot of Columbus Gold – 5411 Bethel / Sawmill Center
Hours - Thursday, Friday and Saturday 9 PM to 2:00 AMish…maybe later depends on business at Columbus Gold

Something about Street Food and Strip Clubs seems like a good fit. Maybe it is the availability of $1 bills for change. Regardless on where you land on that statement, I think a thanks is deserved to Columbus Gold Gentleman’s Club for giving a new businessman a chance.

Raafat is the proud owner of My Snappy Wagon. It is called Snappy because service is quick. Raafat is of Egyptian roots with sidetrips in other countries and states before he landed in Columbus. He has years of restaurant experience. While working for others he has always dreamed of having his own business. In early July 2010, he opened his cart to the world. (more…)

Finding good BBQ in Columbus can feel a bit like the quest for for the holy grail. More often than not, the best BBQ is found on a cafe de wheels with a smoker in use or nearby. The second I pulled into smelling range of Slabadabado I knew I made a good decision. (more…)

Skillet: Mobile Rustic Urban Food

14 Aug

Location varies, updates on twitter at: @SkilletRustic

Skillet is an immensely popular restaurant in Schumacher Place / German Village. On Earth Day 2010, Skillet launched their mobile kitchen to take comfort food to the masses. Skillet on wheels hits the road with three to four dishes which can be prepped and cooked on the fly. The mobile kitchen has most frequently appeared in the parking lot of O’Reilly’s Auto Parts in Olde North Columbus (at N. High Street and Hudson) and more recently, in the Short North. The adventures and appearances of the mobile kitchen can be followed best on twitter at: @SkilletRustic. (more…)
