The Pickled Swine is a deli on wheels, owned by partners Katrina Faenza, Giovani Faenza and Todd Meister of Meister’s Bar. Giovanni hails from a restaurant family in Cleveland and actually went to culinary school twice, once at the Cordon Bleu in PA and secondly to the CIA in the Hudson Valley. Since then he’s mainly worked in the tattoo business owning High Street Tattoo in the Short North for the last six years. Recently he has had the itch to get back into the food industry and thought that a truck was the perfect way. He saw a gap in his neighborhood and wanted to offer handmade traditional deli sandwiches with simple fresh ingredients, locally sourced where possible.
Their signature ‘The Pickled Swine’ sandwich has Black Forest ham, honey ham, swiss cheese, spicy bacon (YES BACON) aioli, scallion cream cheese, spicy dill pickles and pork rinds making it a quadruple pork sandwich. So far one of their most popular sandwiches has been ‘The Johnny’ with capicola ham, salami, buffalo mozzarella, roma tomato, olive tapenade and tossed micro-greens with balsamic vinaigrette. Sandwiches range from $3 for PB&J and old school bologna and cheese to $12.
In addition to sandwiches The Pickled Swine offers a charcuterie plate and variety of salads and pickles. We haven’t tried it yet but the beet salad with Ohio sweet corn, curly endive, garbanzo beans and shallot-lemon thyme vinaigrette sounds good. In the fall and winter they also plan to offer soup options as well.
For dessert The Pickled Swine is offering homemade popsicles in a variety of interesting flavors such as cucumber, lime and mint, sweet corn, basil and lemon and Bing cherry and goat cheese. So far our favorite was the cucumber, lime and mint. Giovani said that he has hundreds of popsicle ideas.
You can find The Pickled Swine at Lunchtimes on the Lawn at Columbus Commons on Wednesdays and at other events around town. They are still looking for other regular locations.
